Causes of Stretch Marks

Understanding Stretch Marks

Our skin is composed of three layers: the outer layer or the epidermis, the middle layer or the dermis, and the innermost layer or the subcutaneous stratum. The dermis (middle layer) keeps our skin elastic and supple, but when the skin is stretched rapidly, the dermis may become damaged. The skin is pulled beyond its ability to hold, and the dermis ruptures. The collagen deposits located in the skin tissue then break down, and this is when the skin tears in certain places. Once these tiny rips in the skin heal, little scars are formed which leads to the appearance of these thin, depressed streaky lines, otherwise known as stretch marks.

How Do We Get Them?

People who are prone to stretch marks are usually those whose bodies have undergone a rapid weight gain or growth spurts in a short period of time. This rapid change in the body leads to rapid stretching of the skin, which in turn leads to stretch marks.

The areas of the body where stretch marks are most likely to occur are the lower abdomen, thighs, hips, butt, breasts, shoulders, inner and outer arms and underarms.

Pregnant women are very inclined to getting stretch marks because of the stretching of the skin across the abdomen during the period of the pregnancy. Adolescents are also prone to this condition because they tend to experience growth spurts during puberty, which leads to a sudden increase in height and weight. Individuals who are overweight, obese or have gained weight very quickly are known to observe stretch marks on their bodies. Body builders develop stretch marks as well, due to growth of muscles, which leads to stretching of the skin.

Other Causes

Genetics also play a role in whether or not you will get stretch marks. Chances are if your parents or siblings had stretch marks, you are more likely to get them too. Other factors are involved too, such as your skin tone or ethnic background; fair-skinned women have been observed to get more stretch marks than darker skin tone women. A good diet helps your skin stretch better, and therefore, poor eating habits and inadequate nutrition could lead to deeper stretch marks. Similarly, healthy skin tends to be more supple and elastic than drier skin; thus, if you have dry, rough skin, chances are you could be more prone to getting stretch marks.

There are a few other rarer causes of stretch marks, such as abnormal collagen formation, or the after-effect of a drug or exposure to chemicals that impede the formation of collagen.

Some experts believe that excessive circulating of cortisol in the body can also lead to the development of stretch marks.  Therefore, the overuse of cortisone skin creams or the prolonged use of oral or topical corticosteroids is also said to be a factor in the formation of stretch marks. Stretch marks are also associated with diseases like Cushing’s syndrome and conditions like diabetes.
